The midseason return of Fox's "Glee" hit a series high in the ratings Tuesday night, bolstered by an "American Idol" lead-in.

"Glee" drew a record 13.7 million viewers and a 5.6 preliminary adults 18-49 rating. The "Glee" return was 44% bigger than its pilot preview after the "American Idol" finale last year.

"Glee" retained 78% of its 90-minute "Idol" (20.6 million, 7.3) lead-in to easily rank as the night's highest-rated scripted series.

Fox points out that the "Glee" rating is the largest for any freshman scripted series this year.

Fox ruled Tuesday, though runner-up NBC fared pretty well. "Biggest Loser" (8.3 million, 3.3) climbed 10%, while "Parenthood" (6.4 million, 2.5) only dipped a tenth against "Glee."

ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" results show (13.4 million, 2.7) was up 8%, "Lost" (9.5 million, 3.8) was down a notch and "V" (5.9 million, 2.3) slipped a tenth to a series low.

CBS stayed out of the way, airing all repeats.

The CW's "90210" (1.5 million, 0.7) was modest and the season series finale of "Melrose Place" (1.1 million, 0.5) limped to the finish line.

Yay! I'm glad they started off well. Hopefully they keep up the ratings next week!

Glee creator Ryan Murphy has announced the addition of three brand new characters for Glee Season 2, and who are we to argue with adding more drama to the show? The more, the merrier! Here is the rundown of the three planned new characters, along with who we would choose if we could cast each of the roles. (Because we know best, as always!) And while we're excited about the prospect of more characters, this can't be welcome news for the agents of the actors who play New Directions mute dancers Matt and Mike! Are those two forever destined to have to just sway in the background?!
