It's strange to think of you being twenty-eight, because in my mind you're always a few degrees shy of seventeen. I asked Carole to send me a picture because I knew you wouldn't, and I'm morally obligated to tell you that silver-rimmed reading glasses would be better than the tortoiseshell ones you have right now. I saw a pair that would suit you in a bespoke shop the other day. I don't know why I bought them. Last week I put them on, trying to see what you saw, and all there was was a blur, like someone had smudged the world out so that I couldn't see where I was going next, or where I was at all.
