With Glee, The Music: Volume 2 dominating the charts this week, Glee, The Music: Volume 1 has held its own as well, achieving Top 10 slots on iTunes (#7) and Amazon (#4) this week, which serves as a testament to the burgeoning popularity of the Glee franchise. Currently, the Glee cast has 4 singles in the Top 20 and 15 singles in the Top 200 at iTunes. Equally astounding, individual tracks from Glee have sold in excess of 3.4 million digital downloads since Glee debuted.

...

This success comes on the heels of the debut soundtrack, Glee, The Music: Volume 1, which entered Billboard's Top 200 Album Chart at #4 when it was released on November 3. And only five weeks later, Glee, The Music: Volume 1 has been certified Gold by the RIAA, signifying sales/shipments in excess of 500,000 units. Glee: The Music, Volume 1 has also been certified Gold in Australia and Canada.

How historic has the "Glee" cast's run been this year? Its 25 placements on the Hot 100 in 2009 are the second-most by any act in a year in the chart's 51-year history. The only act with more? the Beatles, who stormed the chart with 31 songs amidst Beatlemania in 1964.

I'm happy Glee is doing so well! I can't wait until the DVD comes out.

In yet another sign that Glee has gone from
smash comedy hit to cultural phenomenon, the cast's rendition of Journey's
"Don't Stop Believin'" has just been certified Gold for digital sales in
excess of 500,000 downloads, and to date, over two million Glee songs have
been purchased online.
Seven songs from Glee now occupy spots in the top 200
of iTunes Top Songs chart and Newsweek recently observed that the Fox series'
"rabid online fanbase has given the show's music a life of its own." It's
this fervor for the music that prompted the New York Times to say "from
'Cabaret' to Kanye, Songs of 'Glee' are a hit" and the Los Angeles Times to
add "this comedy has become music to our ears."

On Tuesday November 3, Glee: The Music, Volume 1 hits stores. This highly
anticipated debut soundtrack will feature 17 songs heard in Glee's first
season (see below for full track listing). Glee has set itself apart as one
of the few scripted television shows to feature music so prominently and
successfully. Entertainment Weekly recently stated that Glee was able to
accomplish this "by making music so catchy and addictive, it's taken on a life
- and revenue stream - of it's own." They also went on to proclaim "the
snarky, theatrical series is a cult phenomenon on its way to becoming a
national obsession."

How big can cult followings be? I think Glee has a very strong, active fanbase that is willing to engage with it on multiple levels (tour, CD purchases), but I would be very surprised if it got any larger.

I'm so glad two of Kristin Chenoweth's songs made the cut (would have liked to have seen Last Name as well, but I'll take what I can get). Love that Sweet Caroline is there, too. Where is Emma's song?! I would have loved if there were some mashups in the list, but I guess there may have been licensing issues.
